Michigan Beach, Vancouver Island

Michigan Beach, located along the West Coast Trail in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, is named after the SS Michigan, which sank on the rocks here on January 20, 1893. The Michigan’s boiler can still be found on this beach at low tide.

Originally built as a telegraph line between Victoria and Cape Beale, the trail was upgraded with shelters and renamed as the "Dominion Life Saving Trail" following the wreck of the SS Valencia in 1906 in which 136 people perished. As marine navigation technology improved, shipwrecks became less frequent and the trail fell into disrepair. In 1973, the trail was added to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. It was upgraded and thousands of hikers now complete the 75 km (47 mi) West Coast Trail each summer.
