CWC0016
Vancouver Island’s MacMillan Provincial Park is renowned because of its inclusion of Cathedral Grove, one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas-fir trees in British Columbia. Thick carpets of moss, lush ferns and other plant life thrive in this nutrient-rich rainforest. The park is home to many species of wildlife, including woodpeckers, owls, deer, elk, black bear and cougar. The Cameron River, which flows through the park, contains rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. Douglas-fir is the second-tallest conifer in the world (after Coast Redwood). Trees up to 75 m (250 ft) in height and 2 m (6 ft) in diameter are common in old growth stands. Douglas-firs commonly live to more than 500 years and occasionally live beyond 1000 years.
