Wave Splash, Vancouver Island

‘Nuu-chah-nulth’, meaning “all along the mountains and sea” is a term used to describe fourteen separate but related First Nations whose traditional home is on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

The ha’houlthee (chiefly territories) of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations stretches 300 km (185 mi) along the west coast of Vancouver Island, from Brooks Peninsula south to Point-No-Point. Although the Nuu-chah-nulth people of the past shared traditions, languages, and many aspects of culture, they divided themselves into chiefly families, local groups and, later, into Nations. Each Nation includes several local groups centered around a ha’wiih (hereditary chief).
