CWC0001
Sheringham Point Lighthouse was built in 1912 and is one of over 55 lighthouses on Canada’s west coast. As marine traffic increased near the turn of the 20th century, so did marine disasters. The west coast of North America came to be known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific”, in reference to the many lives that were lost here. Records indicate that over 480 vessels have wrecked along the west coast of Vancouver Island alone, due to strong currents and rough weather. The first lighthouse built on Canada’s west coast was the Fisgard Lighthouse, located at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour in Victoria. Originally built by the British in 1860, it was automated in 1929 and is now a Canadian National Historic Site. NOTE: This card is blank inside. Card Price: $3.95 CDN |
